Puppy Training

Congratulations on bringing a puppy into you life.  Puppies are little sponges and their experiences at this age will impact them for the rest of their lives so it is wonderful that you are already thinking about training.  Enrolling in puppy training will help you have a better understanding of how to kindly and effectively communicate with your puppy so that he/she can learn what it means to be a "good dog" in your world.

Puppy Primer

For puppies 9-16 weeks

It is important to start forming a bond and helping your puppy learn right away. Before we meet, I will send you resources to help you understand your puppy's development and learning, how to safely and happily socialize your puppy, and deal with house training and puppy biting.

I offer the Puppy Primer in a two formats based on my availability.  Offerings may include six private sessions (30-40 minutes each) either in-person at your home OR a hybrid of online and in-person training.

During our sessions, you will learn to communicate clearly, kindly and effectively with your new puppy.  You will also learn to recognize your puppy's body language and subtle cues.  Together, we will help your puppy begin to learn how to:

  • Greet people without jumping

  • Pay attention to you

  • Come when called

  • Relax in a crate or on a bed

  • Walk on a leash

By the end of Puppy Primer, you and your puppy will have the foundation and the tools to continue to learn together.

Proficient Puppy

For puppies with previous training, up to 12 months old

Your puppy's learning doesn't stop after Puppy Primer!  Learning is a lifelong activity for both you and your puppy.

The second level of puppy training consists of six weekly sessions (40-45 minutes) at your home or other location as needed (e.g., park, veterinary office as allowed, etc.).  These can be in-person or virtual.

We will build on the skills you and your puppy have already learned by:

  • Adding variables of distance, duration and distraction to improve the reliability of your puppy's response to your requests

  • Teaching your puppy to respond to more challenging requests (e.g., wait or stay, leave it, and drop it).

  • Addressing the challenges you are facing in your unique environment as your puppy has matured.

Individuals who have completed Puppy Kindergarten or other basic training courses elsewhere are welcome to enroll in Proficient Puppy.
